Protein obsession

Hey!

So, I had a call with a student journal last week. She was writing an article for her class about the rise of high-protein, low-cal recipes.

You you know the ones: Cottage cheese ice cream. Cottage cheese pasta. Cottage cheese blended into your hopes and dreams.

And this trend is not new. We've been through the low fat craze of the late '90s, early 2000s (same same).

But this student wanted a dietitian's perspective, and here's what I told her:

Right now, we’re a little protein obsessed.

Like, Nicolas Cage in a Vampire's Kiss obsessed (Ok I didn't mention Nicolas Cage exactly but I stand by this comparison).

I'm all for getting enough protein. But these type of high protein, low calorie recipes kinda miss the point.

And they distract us from the bigger picture.

The balanced eating picture.

Here’s the thing:
Protein is important. But it's not the only thing that matters when you want to feel full, energized and satisfied.

And more isn’t always better. Just ask your kidneys. They have to break down ALL that extra protein.

What you really need is balance:
Protein — for feeling full and keeping your muscles strong
Carbs — for energy, fullness and fiber. Carbs are not the enemy! Fruits and veggies are carbs too (and you need them)
Fat — for satisfaction and getting essential fatty acids
Flavor + texture — because meals should taste good. Not like a sad recipe out of a 2002 fitness magazine.

You what probably tastes better than a cottage cheese shake?

  • A piece of toast with cottage cheese, sliced tomato, olive oil, and black pepper
  • Scrambled eggs + sautéed greens + potatoes or toast
  • Greek yogurt + fruit + peanut butter + a few pretzels for crunch
  • Leftover stir-fry + rice + an egg on top

(Because they WANT IT THAT WAY 🎶)

So, if you’ve been chasing a sky-high protein goal on a 1200 calorie diet...but you feel empty after meals...
Try zooming out. Think about balance.

Hey! We're suddenly a week away from Thanksgiving. Why does time fly like this every year? I'll never know. But I do know that the holidays can feel...complex when it comes to health (ahem, weight) and food. That aunt you see once a year will load up your plate, then turn around and comment on "how much weight you've put on" since she last saw you. Thanks. Or you're at a holiday party and that colleague who tries every fad diet tells you they've sworn off carbs... while your plate is filled...

Hey! Most people say they want to lose weight. What they really want to lose is fat (and feel better in their body). And that's why the scale isn't a great tool by itself. Because it measures EVERYTHING: Bone. Muscle. Fat. Water. Food you're digesting. So it's normal to see your weight jump around by 2-5lbs. Even with the smart scales, you gotta question how accurate they really are. Thankfully, people already have according to research cited in Healthline: A 2021 observational study found...
