Break out your stretchy pants and cry

Hey!

We're suddenly a week away from Thanksgiving. Why does time fly like this every year?
I'll never know.

But I do know that the holidays can feel...complex when it comes to health (ahem, weight) and food.

That aunt you see once a year will load up your plate, then turn around and comment on "how much weight you've put on" since she last saw you.

Thanks.

Or you're at a holiday party and that colleague who tries every fad diet tells you they've sworn off carbs...

while your plate is filled with carbs.

Awkward.

And it's really hard to ignore.

But here are 5 friendly reminders to help you banish all those stupid comments:

  • Your body self-regulates more than you think.
Your body works really hard to keep your weight around its usual range. A few days of holiday eating isn't going to change that. Sure, you might gain a pound or two...but do you still have that pound or two in a few weeks? Usually not.
  • Daily weigh-ins usually reflect fluid, not “failure.”
If you're weighing yourself daily, it's normal to see the number go up because of fluids. Don't stress the numbers.
  • Health is not hungry.
The best thing you can do for your body is nourish it and eat until you're comfortably full. Being hungry because you're not fed isn't a goal.
  • Food is connection, not just calories.
Food is how we bond with friends and family. Is that really worth giving up for a short-term calorie deficit?
  • All foods have some nutrition.
Yes, we want to prioritize nutrient-dense foods. But all foods have some nutrition and can fit into a balanced eating pattern. Even the holiday stuff. (I will die on this hill).

“I’m gonna lose 10 lbs, run a 5k, and eat healthy in the new year!” That sentence shows up every January. And not because you lack discipline. Not because you don’t care. You keep saying this because January is when people plan for the ideal version of their life. Now fast forward a few weeks. Work is still busy. Energy is still limited. Decisions still pile up. Your plan that looked reasonable on January 1st quietly becomes unreasonable. Because you've got too many other priorities. But this...

Hey! Most people say they want to lose weight. What they really want to lose is fat (and feel better in their body). And that's why the scale isn't a great tool by itself. Because it measures EVERYTHING: Bone. Muscle. Fat. Water. Food you're digesting. So it's normal to see your weight jump around by 2-5lbs. Even with the smart scales, you gotta question how accurate they really are. Thankfully, people already have according to research cited in Healthline: A 2021 observational study found...

Hey! So, I had a call with a student journal last week. She was writing an article for her class about the rise of high-protein, low-cal recipes. You you know the ones: Cottage cheese ice cream. Cottage cheese pasta. Cottage cheese blended into your hopes and dreams. And this trend is not new. We've been through the low fat craze of the late '90s, early 2000s (same same). But this student wanted a dietitian's perspective, and here's what I told her: Right now, we’re a little protein obsessed....
