This child’s face…
Followed by this sketchy man handing out pills…
Did NOT prepare me for this to be a roller rink ad.
And I wouldn't have it any other way.
I thought this video was some lame PSA from the “glory days” of D.A.R.E.--that say "no to drugs!" program from my childhood.
But, no. This was waaayyyyy better than D.A.R.E.
10 years ago, Roller Kingdom in Reno, Nevada dropped this masterpiece.
Some people say it’s cringe…
Ridiculous!
Inappropriate!!
To them, I quote the kid in the video and say,
“Bug off man!”
*Cue the 80s synth, colored spandex, and sparkles*
And the best part is…
*add more sparkles*
This was a low budget ad.
Which proves my point–
You don’t need a huge budget to make selling videos that get results.
This is my hill and I. Will. Die. On. It
Now, let’s talk about why this ad hooks you into saying “no” to crack and “yes” to roller skating. Like we all should.
My first thought was, “what on earth is this?”
It’s so cheesy. The music, the dialogue and the visuals-- It oozes the cheese factor.
Then we’ve got this creeper…
Run boy run! Do not get in that van!!!
This video took a dark turn and now we need to save the children.
Ok, now we need to save the kids from this hard core...
GRANDPA?
WHERE IS THIS VIDEO GOING?
It’s going roller skating. That’s where. With more 80s synth. There is never enough synth.
Is this for real?
There’s no way this is serious!
What the….
We need a minute to process what we just saw.
But you know what that was.
It’s a pattern interrupt!
A pattern interrupt that’s so bad, it’s good. Because it’s funny.
Hook, line, and now we’re watching the rest of the video. Where we will learn that roller skating has the power to make people give up a life of crime.
“Because prison is full of people that has never roller skated.”
And this girl knows what she’s talking about.
That’s it for this week!

Hey! We're suddenly a week away from Thanksgiving. Why does time fly like this every year? I'll never know. But I do know that the holidays can feel...complex when it comes to health (ahem, weight) and food. That aunt you see once a year will load up your plate, then turn around and comment on "how much weight you've put on" since she last saw you. Thanks. Or you're at a holiday party and that colleague who tries every fad diet tells you they've sworn off carbs... while your plate is filled...

Hey! Most people say they want to lose weight. What they really want to lose is fat (and feel better in their body). And that's why the scale isn't a great tool by itself. Because it measures EVERYTHING: Bone. Muscle. Fat. Water. Food you're digesting. So it's normal to see your weight jump around by 2-5lbs. Even with the smart scales, you gotta question how accurate they really are. Thankfully, people already have according to research cited in Healthline: A 2021 observational study found...
